Barry Island, South Wales, 1994

from the series 'Early Colour'

July 2013

To celebrate Britain’s balmy summer I’m offering up this seaside classic. Barry Island became famous for its Butlins holiday camp which was a great little place for locals and tourists to spend their sunny weekends at the 1960′s designed resort with its constant entertainment, local radio show and outdoor swimming pools. Problems however with the chalets flat roofs and a subsequent storm caused the company to have severe maintenance problems and sadly it was closed down just a couple of years after this picture was taken. The space was later demolished and converted into a housing development.
