Garry Winogrand was a big early influence on me when I first started taking photography seriously and this was as a result of me following in his footsteps by taking a visit to the local airport after an obligatory trip to the zoo. Back then I was able to get permission from BAA to shoot there but I’m sure that would have became pretty difficult a few years later.

  • Appearing Rooms, South Bank, London, 2007

from the series 'The South Bank'

    July 2014

This fountain outside the Queen Elizabeth Hall, got photographed constantly especially on a sunny day and I was rather pessimistic about getting anything original. I then noticed it was reflected in one of the doors of the QEH and proceeded to rattle away over a hundred frames until I got completely bored with doing so. In the film days (can’t bear the term analogue) I would have probably had to shoot 10 rolls of this as I wouldn’t have been able to review what I’d got, as it’s exceedingly difficult to visually process all the information to be certain of a good result. Anyhow, as soon as saw the dog when I was reviewing them on the screen, I thought that’ll do for now and moved on.

  • June's Hairstylist, Walthamstow, 1993

    from the series 'Portraits'

    Summer 2014

I’m still quite surprised that my most popular picture on flickr (this one with over 800 faves) is a portrait. Funnily enough the original idea was to do a parody of a famous Magnum annual meeting group shot, where everyone had their faces covered by their hands. This was taken after I had asked them to do just that and they all thought it was a bit silly. Now if only they had those dryers for beards.

I am shamelessly promoting some pictures form Brazil during the footie World Cup. Sadly I’ve hardly seen any of the live action due to my no longer having a TV license but I did manage to see England’s dismal performance against Uruguay that saw them crashing out of the tournament at the group stages. Still, you’ve gotta feel sorry for Brazil’s 1-7 humiliation by Germany in the semis.

I used to go to carny quite regularly in the late 80′s and early 90′s but sadly the novelty for me has worn quite thin. • Cafe Girl, Leicester Square, London, 2003

    from the series 'Up West'

    Winter 2013

I am very wary of the critical value of images containing attractive women, all too often the dullest images of said women get unwarranted attention from other images that deserve it more. And so it was when I posted this one on Flickr when it quickly gained over a hundred faves. I am very grateful for all the positive comments this picture received but there were others who were equally perplexed by its popularity and drew the conclusion that it was just another picture of an attractive woman. Fair enough, I personally don’t see this one as being one of my best but then who am I to judge what other people should like when seeing photographs.

  • Smoker, Canary Wharf, 1995

    from the series 'No Smoking'

    December 2013

The ‘No Smoking’ series was the first project I shot after ‘Underground’ but for some reason it didn’t prove to be as successful from a personal point of view. From the beginning I was using flash, as in this picture but somehow I wasn’t very good technically at using it in mixed environments and I felt the subject matter didn’t lend itself to anything more than a dozen or so shots. I pretty much gave up after a few weeks but have returned to the subject in more recent years especially since the ban in England took effect since 2007.

  • England Rugby Team Victory Parade, London, 2003

    from the series 'Up West'

    November 2013

Wow, it’s already ten years since Jonny Wilkinson famously drop kicked that spectacular goal against Australia to bring home the Webb Ellis Cup. The following fanfare of the victory parade through central London was well deserved as was the cricket team who brought home the Ashes two years later. It was a great atmosphere that day with thousands of people lining the streets but it was also very difficult to move and see anything different. Then along Haymarket I came across this group of local school children who had been given some time off but with all the waiting around to catch a minutes glimpse of the England team it looked like they preferred to be back at school. Sadly I can’t see our footy boys bringing home any major championship any time soon.

  • Spanish Horse Show, Broadgate, City of London, 1995

    from the series 'Happenstance'

    October 2013

There is currently a great exhibition of Tony Ray-Jones on at The Science Museum in London and he has been a big influence on me from an early period. So when wandering around the City, I came across the back end of this horse that was part of a Spanish show, I just couldn’t resist echoing the key element of one his more famous shots taken on Derby Day, Epsom in 1967. I think Tony’s one is better as it has a dog in it but I rarely see any dogs being walked around the City so I don’t think I’d have been lucky enough to get one had I waited there all day.

  • Leyton, London, 2011

from the series 'To The 7 Boroughs'

    Autumn 2013

I never thought I’d see the day when I’d come across something decent to photograph on my way to the local supermarket and until I got my little Fuji X100, I found it too much hassle to constantly lug a big DSLR camera around everywhere just in case something amazing happens. On this occasion however I was lucky. A number of people have commented how strange it is that the bench has been placed in an odd position facing the wall. I know why it was like that but it would probably take away part of the enjoyment of the picture of trying to figure out why.

  • Whitechapel, London, 2010

    from the series 'Car Trouble'

    September 2013

It is nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of central London every now and again but for someone who has been somewhat spoiled by an abundance of subject matter there, it can be quite difficult to adjust your visual thinking when wandering around more residential parts of London, especially when people don’t expect to see people wandering around with cameras. For someone who was bought up in East London, albeit around Waltham Forest I am not that familiar with Tower Hamlets, the London borough made famous by the likes of Jack the Ripper and the Krays. A lot has changed in Whitechapel since those days though and it can be difficult  to find anything there that’s really quite as dramatic.

  • Marble Arch Subway, London, 2008

    from the series 'Up West'

    August 2013

I’m not one to usually hang around anywhere for any particular length of time to get a picture but when a friend of mine fell ill in Hyde Park and had to go to the nearest toilet, I could do nothing but wait outside and hope that she’d be okay. After a couple of minutes I decided to make use of my time and started shooting random stuff when all of a sudden this boy started playing keepie uppie in the corner. I immediately saw the potential but had to work the scene for quite a number of frames as there were so many people wandering past the frame. I never noticed the broken security camera in the background with the stencilled graffitti “What Are You Looking At” attributed to Banksy, so I was very thankful for my friends misfortune at that particular moment in time.

  • Barry Island, South Wales, 1994

    from the series 'Early Colour'

    July 2013

To celebrate Britain’s balmy summer I’m offering up this seaside classic. Barry Island became famous for its Butlins holiday camp which was a great little place for locals and tourists to spend their sunny weekends at the 1960′s designed resort with its constant entertainment, local radio show and outdoor swimming pools. Problems however with the chalets flat roofs and a subsequent storm caused the company to have severe maintenance problems and sadly it was closed down just a couple of years after this picture was taken. The space was later demolished and converted into a housing development.

  • Whitehall, London, 2009

Every year thousands of people line the streets of London to cheer on the brave souls who run the 26.2 miles that is the London Marathon. I used to attend events like these on a fairly regular basis but I tended to find you got the same sort of pictures happening like of people trying to clamber onto something in order to obtain a better view. So it was with some surprise that I came across this unusual scene of hundreds of balloons being stored outside a building with this man coming to the door to keep guard of them.
